Program Overview

For over seven decades, Skowhegan has offered artists the opportunity to engage fully with their studio practice, with their peers, and with distinguished faculty and mentors in its nine-week intensive &  residential program. The experience of living and working exclusively alongside other artists has proven to be transformative time and time again.

Skowhegan’s 350-acre rural campus, the dedication of its staff to supporting the creative process, and the diverse community of artists who gather as participants & faculty each summer serve as catalysts for expansive thinking, material experimentation, and a broadened perspective on the world from which we all derive our creative work.

  • Though Skowhegan retains its historic name as a school of Painting & Sculpture, artists working in every media gather on campus for the nine-week program each summer. Participants come to Skowhegan from all over the world and many different backgrounds and experience levels. There are no educational prerequisites to participate in the program, but all participants must be 21 years of age by the start of the program—there is no age cap—any artist who self-identifies as emerging is invited to apply. Skowhegan is committed to supporting those who are accepted to the program and financial need should never serve as a barrier to applying or attending.

All participants, faculty, and staff live and work on campus and are provided with studio space and technical support for their work. There is no traditional instructional component to the program; each participants’ time is their own. However, Faculty play an important role and are on campus as a resource. While there are no formal classes, participants will meet with Resident Faculty for group and individual studio visits throughout the summer. We ask that all participants be prepared to be engaged in conversation with the faculty (though the nature and content of those conversations can be self-determined).

Because the program focuses on process, experimentation, and an opening up of one’s practice, participants are encouraged to come prepared to work without a preconceived agenda or schedule. We strongly advise against using the time to prepare for an upcoming exhibition and instead come prepared to be open to many new conversations. Each participant must commit to being in residence for the full nine-week session from mid-June to mid-August. Absences from the program to fulfill other professional commitments are not permitted. Skowhegan is a rare opportunity to delve deeply into your practice, to encounter and give generous feedback, to accept and offer challenges. The best experiences are those that are completely open and responsive to the community of artists on campus and the landscape in which Skowhegan is located.

  • Because Skowhegan’s community of Resident Faculty Artists and participants is new each year, the program itself is reinvented each day. Skowhegan stands out as a moment when artists have been given absolute freedom in determining their path in the studio without a demanding structure in place, though work, studio visits, and discussion are the central components of the program. Lectures serve as a weekly anchor for the program, and all campus resources, such as the library, the Sculpture Shop, and the media lab are open 24 hours a day. Each participant will have a different understanding of how to use their time, and what the experience will mean, but every participant finds new energy and rigor, as well as new frustrations and questions.

  • While everyone participating in the program and on our staff is required to be vaccinated, we understand that there are some within the community that are still observing safety measures for both health & comfort reasons. Furthermore, in order to help protect the relative precarity of the local area, we will implement and maintain a base level of COVID precautions when we are on-site and off-site.

Even if you personally feel comfortable with no longer adhering to COVID safety regulations, we are all a part of this community and it is important that we meet each other where we all are for the duration of the program so that everyone is included in safe ways. Once we have admitted the class of participants and have a better sense of each person’s health concerns, we will make determinations on COVID safety measures, including testing and masking, that are inclusive to the group as a whole. Once those measures, if any, are decided upon, everyone participating in the program, as participant, faculty, or staff, will be expected to adhere to them. As with all other aspects of campus life, we ask that everyone proactively communicate their boundaries and that we respect and care-take for those stated boundaries.

Campus

Participants live on campus for the full duration of the nine-week program. Studios are open 24 hours a day. Participants are also encouraged to use the 350 acres of forest, pastures and lakefront on campus for their work.

Accommodations

Living quarters are shared in converted cottages set on a large lake, with shared bathrooms. Many participants will have roommates. The cottages have common areas with fireplaces or wood-burning stoves. There are no cooking facilities in participant living quarters, but all meals and snacks are provided by the Dining Hall. Skowhegan has multiple residences that are fully accessible. Participants furnish their own blankets, sheets and towels.

Studios

Studios are located amid woods and rolling pastures a short walk from the lake and are open 24 hours a day. Each studio is approximately 10 feet by 13 feet in size. While each studio is private, all are located in buildings that are communal. Many of the buildings are original to the campus’ previous life as a farm but have been updated over time. Studios can accommodate a variety of work and accessibility needs. Internet access is unavailable in the studios.

Technical Facilities

There is a large wood and metal shop with basic ceramic facilities as well as a studio manager to assist with equipment & tools. Skowhegan has a small Media Lab with computers and all necessary software for video, sound, and image editing. The Media Lab also offers basic photo, video, and sound recording equipment for check out, as well as a sound conditioned and light proof room for recordings. Internet access is not reliable on campus and is limited to the Barn, Media Lab, and the Library buildings.

Fresco

Skowhegan offers the rare opportunity to learn and practice buon fresco technique. In the context of Skowhegan's program, fresco offers an opportunity to explore a rich and ancient process that can inspire and accommodate a broad range of contemporary ideas.

Library

The Robert Lehman Library collection contains over 15,000 art books; catalogues; bound magazines; and the Skowhegan Lecture Archive, consisting of over 600 recordings of lectures given by Skowhegan faculty since 1952. These recordings comprise a unique art historical resource. The Library also houses a small collection of film and video art. Participants have access to this collection and are encouraged to organize special viewings in groups or individually. The Library is open 24 hours a day.

Structure

Performances, reading groups, discussions, and community and off-campus projects initiated by participants comprise an important part of the Skowhegan experience as each member of the community responds to the community and environment surrounding them.

Faculty, Lectures, and Studio Visits

Skowhegan's Board of Governors, all working artists, invites a new faculty of Resident and Visiting Artists to campus each year to guarantee a diversity of perspectives.

Five Resident Faculty live on campus alongside the participants and an academic staff for the duration of the nine-week program. These artists are highly accomplished and represent a cross-section of the contemporary art world. The structure of Skowhegan's program is provided by one-on-one studio visits with each of the faculty members, and through the series of lectures given by the faculty over the summer.

Six Visiting Faculty complement the Resident Faculty by joining the community for shorter visits throughout the summer. The diversity within the faculty group helps allow discussions to be dynamic and substantive and much of the mentorship takes place outside of the formal studio visit hours. This is what sets Skowhegan apart as an experience.

Resident Faculty Artists live on campus for the entire session and lecture on their work. Each Resident Faculty Artist meets individually with each participant during the summer, participates fully in the life of campus, and works alongside participants in their own studios. Visiting Faculty Artists come to Skowhegan for 3 to 5 days to lecture and provide critiques. Each participant meets with one Visiting Faculty Artist during the session. In addition to Resident and Visiting Artists, Skowhegan invites an individual who brings a perspective from outside the practice of visual arts to deliver the annual Paul Mellon Lecture. Poets, architects, philosophers, journalists, curators, historians, and choreographers have delivered the lecture over the years.

  • Yes, there is an application fee due when you submit your application. The one time application fee amount is determined by the date that you apply. Please refer to the application fee timetable for application fee rates.

  • No. Unfortunately, we are not able to waive the application fee.

It is one of our priorities as an organization to make the experience possible for any artist, regardless of their financial situation through financial aid awarded at the time of acceptance.

However, we do rely on the application fee to cover the substantial costs involved with processing and reviewing each application.

The application fee is tiered by date of application and is much cheaper for those who apply early.

  • The application fee must be paid using Skowhegan’s Stripe payment system which takes most major credit cards. If you are experiencing difficulty using Stripe, call Skowhegan at +1 (646) 681-6426 or email help@skowheganart.org. You must contact us at least 24 hours before each application fee increase or deadline to request assistance in using an alternative payment method for the application fee.

  • The category choice you make is used for administrative purposes and it is important to note that there is no right or wrong category for you to select. Many artists choose this category because they work in multidisciplinary, conceptually driven forms incorporating 2-D, 3-D, and Time-Based media. Others select this category because their work is more ephemeral or employs digital practices. Please choose whichever category that you feel best aligns with your practice.

  • Yes. Skowhegan allows collaborative teams to apply. Collaborative teams must apply using one application to represent the entire team. Please note that only 3 members of a collaborative team can attend the Skowhegan program at one time.

  • The names of your references are not revealed to the admissions panel and are not considered in the primary admissions process. Identify individuals who can speak to your commitment and openness as an artist and your ability to work well in a communal setting. Skowhegan does not accept letters of recommendation.

  • The biggest mistake applicants make is to submit bad portfolio images. A lot of images suffer because applicants shrink the image file itself, rather than changing the pixel dimensions of the image. Even if you think this doesn't apply to you, you should still carefully read the image specifications outlined in Step 3 of the Application. These instructions are there to help you put your best work forward for our particular application. Furthermore, despite the constant advancements made in cell phone camera technology we suggest that you avoid submitting images made by your phone while handheld or in low light situations. If you must use a cellphone for documentation please make sure that you are doing so in a well lit area.

  • After you have submitted your application you will receive an automatic email acknowledging our receipt of your application.

Please be sure to check your spam folder and make sure you set your email settings to accept help@skowheganart.org as a safe address. Mail generated from our website is often blocked by spam filters (this is particularly true for those who use Hotmail, AOL, and Earthlink).

If you did not receive a confirmation email, please contact the office at help@skowheganart.org to confirm receipt of your application.

  • Review panels are composed of members of Skowhegan’s Board of Governors, members of the upcoming summer’s faculty, and members of the Skowhegan Alliance, an alumni committee.

All are distinguished artists and many are alumni. Applicants are presented to the jurors anonymously.

  • You will receive email notification by the end of April and as early as mid-April. We do not respond to inquiries about application status prior to this notification. Please do not call or email the office to inquire about your acceptance status.

Application & Admissions

Tuition & Financial Aid

  • Tuition, room, and meals is $6,000 USD. Additionally, all participants are required to pay a $75 activities fee. Admission to Skowhegan is need-blind. If you are accepted, we will work with you to make it possible for you to attend.

Each applicant is asked to request a financial aid amount with this in mind. We will determine an award amount at admission based on this information, as well as other financial information requested in the application. Keep in mind that most participants need financial assistance and take that into consideration when requesting your aid.

To qualify for a Matching Fellowship, applicants must complete Sections A, B, and D of Step 4 of the Skowhegan Application.
