FRESCO: AN ORAL HISTORY MADE THROUGH THE HAND

At Skowhegan, we spend a lot of time thinking about ghosts: the bad ones—those who try to keep us beholden to histories, that ask us not to look at potential, but to stay where we are.

And the good ones. The joy of some of our great ghosts is that they are often ones we admire. They are embodied in the artistic freedom that we value, and they are concretized by traditions that can be adapted and remade in a way that is urgent, new, and innovative.

Since Skowhegan’s first summer, one of these ghost-traditions has remained: The Fresco Program.

About skowhegan

SKOWHEGAN IS AN INTENSIVE NINE-WEEK SUMMER RESIDENCY PROGRAM FOR EMERGING VISUAL ARTISTS ESTABLISHED IN 1946.

Skowhegan is an intensive nine-week summer residency program for emerging visual artists located on a historic 350-acre farm in rural Maine. Each year Skowhegan brings together a gifted and diverse group of individuals who have demonstrated a commitment to artmaking and inquiry. Founded by artists in 1946, and still governed by artists, the program provides an atmosphere in which participants are encouraged to work free of market or academic expectations.
