Simon Leung was born in Hong Kong. His projects in various media include an opera set in Griffith Park; a live/video performance addressing AIDS in the figure of the glory hole; a trilogy on “the residual space of the Vietnam War;” an extended proposal of Duchamp’s oeuvre as a discourse in ethics; a meditation on the site/non-site dialectic by way of Edgar Allan Poe; context-specific works centering on the squatting body as a heuristic cipher; and a twenty-year plus collaboration with the writer and art world figure Warren Niesłuchowski. Leung’s most recently completed work is ACTIONS! / ADJUCNTS!, an “art workers’ theater” project on the intersection of art and labor. Although not collected under any mediumistic or stylistic rubric, at the heart of all of Leung’s work is the meditation of the ethical challenge, broadly defined, as proposition and possibility. He is co-editor of the anthology Theory in Contemporary Art Since 1985 and Professor and Associate Chair of graduate studies in the Department of Art at the University of California, Irvine. Leung was a recipient of the Art Journal Award for his essay “The Look of Law;” a scholar in residence at the Clark Art Institute; and has received fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation, the Fellows of Contemporary Art, New York State Council on the Arts, New York Foundation for the Arts, City of Los Angeles, California Community Foundation and Art Matters. Internationally, his work has been presented at the Venice Biennale (2003), the Guangzhou Triennial (2008), the Anren Biennale (2017), Generali Foundation (Vienna), 1A Space (Hong Kong), the Ujazdowski Castle Centre for Contemporary Art (Warsaw), neue Gesellschaft für bildende Kunst (Berlin), Sala Mendoza (Caracas), the National Museum of Contemporary Art (South Korea), and the Inside-Out Art Museum (Beijing). In the US, his work has been shown at the Whitney Biennial (1993); the Museum of Modern Art; The New Museum; Santa Monica Museum of Art, The Kitchen, MOCA, Hammer Museum, and the MAK Center for Art and Architecture.
