While they were artist residents at @skowhegan, Jina Valentine and Heather Hart noticed that the dining room was more idyllic than usual: it wasn’t self-segregated as they had expected. They decided to engage the issue of segregation in the lunch room, and embarked on a project they called The Black Lunch Table. Hoping to engage the lunch room’s history as a battle ground of social dynamics and pinpoint shared concerns among black contemporary artists, Jina and Heather provide site and prompts to lunch tables all over the country. Artists like Theaster Gates and Carrie Mae Weems have even participated! Now, with a Creative Capital award, the two artists are planning on expanding the project and building an online archive where conversations can be accessed by all!
